Engineering students on iGem team head to genetically-engineered machine competition

Florida State University’s iGEM team is gearing for its second trip to the 2018 iGEM Giant Jamboree in Boston this fall. 

The Giant Jamboree features work from the International Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) competition and is projected to host nearly 300 international, interdisciplinary teams. These teams study a need or problem centered around biological engineering, then collaborate to design, build, and test solutions.

FAMU-FSU Engineering NSBE chapter wins big at 2018 annual conference

On March 22, 2018, the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering student chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) was awarded Southeastern Region III Chapter of the Year. This region encompasses five states and the Bahamas. Representing the college, 56 NSBE chapter members attended the 44th annual convention in Pittsburgh. This is the first time since 2006 the chapter has won the award.

Engineering Research Collaboration Awarded $1.18M Grant for Land Use/Climate Change Study

The biosphere of the “Big Blue Planet” is dependent upon balance. From the land we inhabit to the atmosphere we breathe, everything matters. Balance is essential for maintaining a sustainable future for generations to come. So how do we keep our planet in balance? 

There are many ways, but Dr. Gang Chen, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is interested in how changes to land and climate affect the environment and its inhabitants.

FAMU-FSU Engineering students place third in AMIE Design Challenge at 2019 BEYA conference

Eight freshmen engineering students from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering won third place in the Advancing Minorities Interest in Engineering (AMIE) Design Challenge. The event was hosted at the Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) conference held in February, 2019 in Washington, D.C. A total of 11 teams from various Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) participated in the event.

Six engineering undergrads inducted into Florida State University’s prestigious Garnet & Gold Scholar Society this spring

Established in 2010, the Florida State University Garnet & Gold Scholar Society facilitates student involvement and recognizes undergraduate students who excel within and beyond the classroom in at least three of five areas: international experience, internship, leadership, research and service.
 
The induction ceremony was held virtually this spring due to COVID-19.
 

ISL Faculty Affiliate Yan Li receives Developing Scholar Award

Congratulations to Yan Li, Associate Professor of Chemical & Biomedical Engineering in the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering and a Faculty Affiliate of the Institute for Successful Longevity, who was honored with a Developing Scholar Award at Florida State University’s 2021 Faculty Awards ceremony Thursday. The Developing Scholar Award identifies, recognizes and honors future research leaders currently at the rank of Associate Professor. Dr.

Postdoc Spotlight: Xuegang Yuan, Ph.D.

Xuegang Yuan is a post-doctoral fellow in biomedical engineering and was recently named a Toffler Scholar by the Florida State University College of Medicine and the Karen Toffler Charitable Trust. He was honored with the fellowship for his proposal titled, “Extracellular Vesicles derived from 3D-Engineered Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell Aggregates for Multiple Sclerosis Treatment.”

Yuan’s research focuses on stem cell-derived therapy to treat neurodegeneration, prevalent in diseases like multiple sclerosis and other neurodegenerative diseases.
