If you have ever faced the daunting decision of whether to undergo surgery, you likely had several questions. Among the myriad considerations were likely questions about the skill and experience of the person holding the knife.

New research from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering could help surgeons better prepare for their crucial work. The Google-endowed dean of the college, Suvranu De, led the development of an AI-powered tool that trains surgeons by analyzing video of their surgical technique and providing feedback.

When FAMU-FSU mechanical engineering professor Christian Hubicki and Morehouse College physics professor Dwayne Joseph from joined forces, their aim was to broaden the scope of robotic education at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) through an exciting summer course. 

They met while participating in a distributed teaching collaborative involving several institutions that share access to robotics coursework. The summer course is designed to provide a rapid introduction to advanced robotics algorithms, a course not commonly offered at the undergraduate level.

Florida A&M University (FAMU) recently named Suvanu De, the Dean of the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, with the prestigious “Google Endowment” designation.

It is the first Google deanship endowed to FAMU and is a testament to the college’s drive to attain Carnegie Research I status.

The graduate programs in the nation’s only joint engineering college are among the best in Florida and the nation, according to the latest rankings published in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 edition of “Best Graduate Schools.”  

The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering moved up one spot among public institutions with a No. 60 ranking nationally and tied for third overall among Florida public universities.
