Researchers find space between polymer chains affects energy conversion

A team led by FAMU-FSU College of Engineering researchers has new insight into molecules that change their shape in response to light.

The researchers studying azobenzene-based polymers found that their free volume — a measure of the space between polymer chains — was strongly linked with the polymers’ ability to convert visible light radiation into mechanical energy.

The results were published in Advanced Functional Materials.

Engineering researchers prove well-accepted theory of Onsager vortices doesn’t hold up

Wei Guo and his team of researchers disproved a well-accepted theory of swirling motion in 2D superfluid turbulence

Engineering researchers at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering and the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory revealed that a well-accepted explanation of the spontaneous formation of Onsager vortices in 2D superfluid turbulence is incorrect. Their findings are published recently in Physical Review Letters (PRL).

Maribel Amwake Joins FAMU-FSU Engineering as New Director of Student Engagement

Maribel Amwake is the new Director of Student Engagement at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. She brings a wealth of academic experience to the position, and her role will be to provide leadership and support to student organizations on campus. She plans to be involved with the mentorship program as well as assist with scholarships and awards at the college.

New $1.2M NASA Grant to Recruit Minority Students To Aerospace Engineering

Florida A&M University (FAMU) and the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering received $1.2 million from NASA to recruit more African American students to pursue careers in aerospace engineering.

According to the grant proposal from the college, the funds will establish a multi-institution coalition to recruit underresourced minorities (URMs) for a program that will give hands-on experience to students in NASA-relevant fields. FAMU is one of three Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) selected to participate.

Opportunities for undergraduate research experience give students path to success

Getting into the engineering research lab often and early can be the key to finding your future career path

Florida State University sophomore Bailee Ku spent the summer of 2021 as a paid undergraduate research assistant at the internationally renowned Center for Advanced Power Systems (CAPS). As an engineering student, she is interested in medical devices and aerospace and is exploring internships during the summer.

FAMU-FSU College of Engineering offers two new programs at FSU Panama City campus

Officials announced two new engineering programs at FSU Panama City during the Florida State Board of Trustee meeting. A bachelor’s program in mechanical engineering and a master’s program in systems engineering will begin in fall 2018.

“These new programs are coming to FSU Panama City because of the strong demand from local industry and support from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering,” FSU Panama City Dean Randy Hanna said. “With community partners, such as the Navy base, Tyndall and GKN, our students will have unlimited options.”
